Other Lighthouse Information:
In 1998 Hurricane Georges heavily damaged the Round Island lighthouse which was located about four miles off-shore from Pascagoula. Then in 2005 Hurricane Katrina inflicted masssive damage to the lighthouse, which was under reconstruction on Round Island at the time.
In July 2010 the base of the lighthouse was transported by barge to the mainland. In November 2010 the caisson along with five steel beams were driven 50 feet deep to the sand layer of the earth so it would provide a stable foundation to support the lighthouse’s weight. The original lighthouse was solid brick inside and out. The rebuilt structure has a steel reinforcement layer sandwiched between the inside and outside brick. The restoration and reconstruction, including the interior, was completed in 2015. It was relit on Nov. 13, 2015. The lighthouse is part of a public park on the corner of Hwy. 90 and Pascagoula Street.
